Some Very Sad News

Dave Boon

Dave Boon

I had some very sad news this weekend. A good friend of mine Dave Boon was killed in a light plane crash last Friday.

He was the pilot and was flying his girlfriend, Carol Ann Potter, to Jersey for Easter. They crashed into a hillside in bad weather.

I have known Dave for about ten years. I met him as he played lead guitar in a band Hardware. The played down my local pub regularly.

Nor only did he play in a rock band, but he ran his own business, help raised three kids, and found time to learn to fly. Obviously the latter was not one of his better ideas.

As someone said last week end, “Dave did all these things, whilst you and I were sitting watching the TV.”

I still can not believe he is never again going to be sitting with the Tuesday Night Crew in the Lion.

The local press have the story here.

So I thought a video for Dave. He was always a big AC/DC fan. His band often played AC/DC covers. Here is a classic for Dave, Let There Be Rock.

I’m a Cool Nerd Apparently

by @ 11:34. Filed under Who Am I?

I love these potted personality tests. The more obscure the better. They probably tell you nothing about me, other than I love doing obscure, pointless personality tests then publishing them online. Perhaps a hint of narcissism there?

Anyway, this test looks atl what kind of nerd I am. Apparently I’m a Cool Nerd.

So I am laughing out loud and winking at you. I am also doing other hacker things.

NerdTests.com says I'm a Cool Nerd. Click here to take the Nerd Test, get geeky images and jokes, and write on the nerd forum!

Quick Fun Facts:

399297 unique people have taken this test.

Based on these unique user’s answers…

29.8% of test takers are gals,
68.4% are guys.

15.5% of test takers get aroused by “iPhone,” while
36.9% get utterly ill.

32.2% of all test takers would choose the Internet over sex, and
26.6% of married test takers prefer the Internet over sex.

Only 4.5% of test takers own a Jar Jar Binks t-shirt, though
49.7% of them don’t own a lightsaber (priorities == messed up).

I think the test is flawed. There are no questions about Buffy. How can any one lay claim to any degree of Nerdship without obsessing about all things Buffmeister.

Linkin Park: One Step Closer

by @ 17:36. Tags: , , ,

As I mentioned earlier, I got a littel drunk on St. Patrick’s Day and ended up murdering songs at a Karaoke.

Strange thing is I enjoyed it. I normally hate Karaoke. I think the reason was the song I was singing. This song is a lot of fun to sing. Well, when I say ’sing’, I mean ’scream and yell.’

SHUT UP WHEN I’M TALKING TO YOU!!!!

Fun to sing, but not to live.

And with this song I am finally back in the 21st centuary. Might stay here for a few weeks.

Paddy’s Day Karaoke

I decided to go and see what was happening in the High Street on St Patrick’s Day. We do not have a large Irish community here as far as I know. But I was bored so WTF.

spd5

I had a tour of the High Street to see what was going on. Some drunken Irish people being drunken and Irish. Pretty much as expected really. Being 50 percent Irish felt duty bound to join in.

spd1

It was a pretty good evening. I made some new “friends for life”, who’s faces and names have now faded from memory. Actually I’m not sure that there ever was a memory in the first place. I had quite a bit to drink.

spd3

Two things I do remember. One is, I smoked a cigarette. I am so annoyed with myself, this is the first time I have smoked since before Christmas. Too much alcohol and my will power leaves by the nearest window.

spd2

The second thing I remember but wished I didn’t is that I sang at a Karaoke. Now I hate Karaoke with a passion. It’s tolerable if the singer can sing, but when someone can’t it’s torture.

spd6

My friends find the singing out of tune funny. Apparently it’s all part of being a sport. I disagree heartily. Singing out of tune in public should be the next freedom curtailed in the name of The War on Terror, or whatever it is they are branding it as this week,

Let me make this crystal clear, if you stand up and murder a song I love, then I’m going to murder you. It really is that simple – and your kids – and anyone you smiled at in the last 24 hours.

Not surprisingly no one ever invites me along to Karaoke evenings, which is just fine with me.

spd4

But on Tuesday night after too many Guinness, I was up and murdering songs with the best of them. I actually enjoyed it, although I doubt if any one else did.

I enjoyed Karaoke? I must have had way too much to drink. But as I said at the time, “Ish traditional.” So that’s OK then.

Spring Clean

This week I started to spring clean. I have been sorting out books I don’t want any more. I hate throwing away books. But when the shelves are full it’s time for a clean out.

I went to the second hand book stall on the market. The man there was not interested. He said he had plenty at the moment.

But he would take my old VCR cassettes at 10 pence each. Maybe I’ll take him up on that offer. It would clear out another cupboard and I can’t remember the last time I watched any of them. Maybe there would be enough for a couple of beers.

I decided to take my books to the charity shops. There are three within easy walking distance of my flat. The multiplication of charity shops is a sign of the times I’m told.

In the end I sorted out 70 books. It felt like I was giving away part of my life. Will I look back on this day as a watershed?

Still I felt quite good after I got home, clearing out the old makes way for the new. A spring clean indeed.

I needed an appropriate track to go with a spring clean. At first I thought anything by “The Boss”. Springsteen / spring clean – it sounds similar if you are 40+ and suffering from rock induced tinnitus. But the YouTube videos of Springsteen I wanted to use have the “Embedding disabled by request” flag up.

So screw Brucie.

Next I thought a song to mark the passage of time. “Time” by Prince seemed appropriate. You can still SEE Prince’s videos on YouTube but Prince and Universal have forced the audio track removed . This includes any covers, even if a song is only used as a backing track by kids dancing

So screw Prince and Universal Music.

In the end I went with this, because it is such a cheerful song.
